Are Electric Toothbrushes Better Than Traditional Ones?

With modern technological advancements all around us, we continually upgrade our old manual tools and devices for electric ones that can do the job better or easier, sometimes both.

Toothbrushes are no exception; with electric toothbrushes, some patients may be tempted to dismiss the manual toothbrush together, while others are skeptical if an electric toothbrush could be worth the extra cost.

Studies suggest that a traditional toothbrush can be just as effective for cleaning your teeth as an electric one when used correctly.

So the electronic toothbrush isn't worth it? Well, not so fast. It depends.

What Are the Advantages of an Electric Toothbrush?

Electric toothbrushes make brushing your teeth easier, and that is the most significant advantage they offer over a traditional toothbrush. Patients who cannot do a good job brushing their teeth with a conventional toothbrush for one reason or another will likely get a better clean out of an electric toothbrush.

Electric toothbrushes make tooth brushing easier for people with low dexterity to get an effective clean on their teeth. Patients with issues like Parkinson's or Alzheimer's and injured patients who can't perform fine motor movement can all use an electric toothbrush to compensate for the lack of manual ability.

So electric toothbrushes are better? That's not necessarily true either; conventional toothbrushes can be just as effective when the patient uses the toothbrush correctly. Taking the time to brush and use the correct technique will compensate for the benefits of the electric toothbrush nicely.
