Despite their somewhat fearsome reputation, root canals are common and straightforward procedures. However, as with any somewhat invasive procedure, special care is required after a root canal to prevent discomfort and ensure the procedure’s long-term success.
Today, we’re discussing what to expect during a root canal and how to optimize post-procedure care.
What’s a Root Canal?
A root canal is a procedure in which a tooth's damaged internal soft tissue, or ¨pulp,¨ is removed. The living part of a tooth, the pulp, contains blood vessels, nerve endings, and connective tissue.
In a root canal procedure, the dentist first cleans and numbs the damaged tooth and surrounding area. Then, using special instruments, the damaged pulp is removed from within the tooth’s structure, and the remaining empty space is sealed with a protective material.
Root canals offer a number of vital benefits to a patient, from providing immediate relief from pain to salvaging a portion of their natural tooth and helping to maintain the function and integrity of their bite.
Of course, maximizing the benefits of a root canal calls for proper care post-procedure care.
Post-Root Canal Care
Post-root canal care is crucial to ensure proper healing and the long-term success of the treatment.
After a root canal, it is common to experience some discomfort or swelling, which can be managed with a cold compress and over-the-counter pain medication. Also, for about a week to ten days post-procedure, the patient is also required to take antibiotics to stave off infection.
During this time, it’s as important as ever that the patient remains committed to a strong oral hygiene routine. However, immediately following a root canal, it’s important to take certain steps, like using special mouthwash, brushing around the treated area with care, and attending regular follow-up appointments, to ensure proper healing.
Once the site has healed, the patient and dentist choose a long-term restoration. Simply sealing off the opening with filling material is an option, though, to maximize the procedure’s effectiveness (up to fifteen years with proper care!) and provide protection and restore the tooth's functionality, a dental crown is often the preferred option.
